It takes discipline and determination to earn college credit in high school. At Loyola University New Orleans, we aim to make it as seamless as possible for you to apply that hard-earned dual enrollment credit toward your degree. What Is Dual Enrollment?
According to a national survey of 23,000 students conducted by the U.S. Department of Education, about one third of high school students took courses for post-secondary credit in high school. Known as dual or concurrent enrollment, a growing number of students are taking advantage of this opportunity. In addition to potential cost-savings, students get a preview of college-level rigor that will help prepare them for their first year of college.
Requirements for dual enrollment vary state by state, but here in Louisiana, students may earn dual enrollment credit from either a post-secondary institution such as a local community college or university, or through college-level courses taught at high schools that meet requirements laid out by the Louisiana Department of Education.
If you’re currently a high school student, Loyola offers several ways for you to earn concurrent credit. Learn about our Early Scholars Program to earn concurrent credit, or our Loyola First Class program to take a three-credit course for free.
Transferring Dual Enrollment Credits
If you are a motivated student who earned concurrent credit, Loyola welcomes you to apply. We can see that you are driven, able to juggle a full workload, and eager to achieve your academic and professional goals. We may accept up to 64 hours of transfer credit from an accredited college or university. All coursework will be evaluated by our admissions team and the dean for your chosen major.
Keep in mind these factors:
- You must earn a grade of C or higher for the courses to be eligible
- Technical school credits or remedial coursework will not be considered
- Correspondence courses and experiential learning programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis
If you earned college credit through a dual enrollment program in the United States, you must submit your official transcripts for evaluation within 60 days of registering. If you earned credit from an accredited program outside the United States, you must submit your official transcripts within 90 days from the date of registration.
Degree in Three
We’re excited to offer the Degree in Three program for dual enrollment achievers who have a clear plan for their future. If you feel confident about your chosen major, you may apply your college credit earned during high school to earn your degree in three years. You’ll cut an entire year of expenses and prepare for an earning position or graduate school one year sooner than a traditional four-year program.
Other Ways to Earn Credit
In addition to earning transfer credit through concurrent enrollment, Loyola University offers a variety of other options for students to earn credit by examination, including Advanced Placement (AP), the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
